DST has a proud record of funding leading edge research, with a number of projects featured during the conference. This includes Hydrogen South Africa (HYSA) where the University of Western Cape have commissioned a Hydrogen Systems Program developing high temperature fuel cell technology, Optimal Energy with the SA electric vehicle, and Tshwane University of Technology where Retecza has developed a hydrogen powered bicycle for rural areas.

In respect of TUT, Professor Wolfgang Diehl of Fraunhofer IST Germany will be acknowledged as an Extraordinary Professor of the institution.

All of these initiatives show that South Africa is not a net importer of technology, but a vibrant partner for the development of local solutions with international partnerships.

The high level conference program including participants from the African Continent and internationally, will give delegates a warm feeling that despite global warming South Africa is well on the road to a sustainable future, with a host of local innovations.
