Five photovoltaic (PV) plants and four wind energy plants, built by the private sector, will come into operation between 2026 and 2027.
In total, the electrical projects will contribute 166 megawatts to the national grid, according to the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity (ICE), when signing the commitment letters.

All the projects will be built in Guanacaste and their objective is to guarantee the satisfaction of the country’s electrical demand, based on a greater participation of renewable sources.
“We are pleased to announce the progress of these clean generation projects by the private sector. They will join the repowering of Tejona in Tilarán and our new San Antonio solar plant, in La Uruca. We will have greater provisions for phenomena such as El Niño,” said Verny Rojas, Electricity Manager of ICE.
Among the requirements to sign the contracts and begin construction, companies must have the acceptance of the Feasibility Report (issued by ICE), the Environmental Feasibility Declaration (from SETENA), the Public Generation Services Concession (issued by ARESEP) and the connection contract.
